How to Build a Teamwork Mentality

When a group of two or more people work together to accomplish a goal, that’s teamwork. How effectively and happily the team works together is another matter entirely, and getting a disparate group of employees or volunteers to work as one is frequently difficult. Nevertheless, building a teamwork mentality is essential for businesses, volunteer organizations and even families. The first step is establishing trust.

1. Establish trust among teammates and leadership. According to the University of Florida, trust among coworkers — and teammates — is essential for a productive and happy work environment, and is necessary for working together as a group. Trust builds over time; it can’t be established overnight. However, you as a manager can build a solid foundation immediately by always keeping promises, not engaging in backstabbing or damaging office chatter, and demonstrating reliability by always showing up on time and delivering quality work. These steps not only establish trust, they motivate others to perform.

2. Hand-select a team to solve a problem or improve a process. Meet with a team and give them an actionable directive. In other words, give them a problem that they have a reasonable chance to solve by their qualifications, experience, and area of expertise. You can ask the team to establish its own leader or spokesperson, appoint one yourself, or have everyone take turns. Don’t play favorites. It kills enthusiasm and causes resentment among teammates.

3. Check in, but don’t micromanage. Trust your team and let them work with the understanding that they’ll have a fair amount of autonomy, but with the understanding that you’ll be checking in periodically to review progress or provide guidance. It helps the team get to know you if you are willing to share with the team some of your own experiences. Keep in mind that all team members should be present at all team-related meetings, to avoid hurt feelings. Team members should actively communicate with each other and with you — and that means listening as well as talking — in a diplomatic way.

4. Have fun. Professionals often establish offsite team building activity days or go out to dinner to have a few laughs outside of work pressures. You can also engage in “icebreakers,” quick and easy activities that encourage teammates to get to know each others’ personalities and habits. For example, at the beginning of a meeting, team members can toss around a softball until each person has caught it at least one time. Each person says something about himself whenever he catches the ball. The act of tossing and catching the ball physically establishes a team feeling, and the information shared establishes familiarity.

5. Celebrate success. Don’t single out individual team members for accolades. Instead, reward the entire team, and preferably publicly. While financial bonuses are nice, it’s not the only route. Try awarding team members with a comp day or movie tickets, or host a gathering to which they can bring their families.

The Seven Deadly Sins Of Engagement at Events & Trade Shows

In marketing “engagement” is one of the things all good marketers strive to attain for the brands they work for or clients they serve, whether it is in a trade show booth, a kiosk display, or an event. And the newest kid on the block, known as experiential marketing, requires it to succeed.

What good is experiential marketing if the experience is not engaging in a memorable way?

As we are all very much aware, in this day and age, our attention span is shorter due to everything vying for it. From our phones, tablets, TV and, yes, even good ole print media, meaningful engagement has become more challenging to attain.

Even though marketers continue to discover, create and utilize new methods of engagement by tracking our activity so we are presented with “relevant” content and ads, even then, they get mere seconds to make that connection and engage.

So, what can be done to up the ROI and get that meaningful engagement you seek?

Well, for one we can avoid the “Seven Deadly Sins of Engagement”!

Sin #1   It Is the Same Old Thing Presented In A “New” Way

We are a bit surprised when companies or agencies simply try to polish up the “old” and serve it up as “new”. Take trade shows as an example. We have observed that the basic design and layout of trade show floors are pretty much the same as in the 80’s. They are set up in a grid-like pattern, with very little imagination and left up to the individual companies to work within this confining design to create something that will engage the audience. We feel it is high time that trade show producers begin to put more creative thought into this aspect of the trade show experience.

Of course, the space itself can create some challenges, the show wants to produce the maximum amount of available spaces to offer and traffic flow is also a consideration but don’t you think it is high time that we got away from the same design and got more creative?

And even if, nothing is done with the layout, what if you could maximize your space and have something no one else can?

Sin #2   It is not Interactive

So, you got all the latest digital screens and cool graphics and all that is done with it is you run a video loop. Or you got the magician, spin the wheel or “god forbid” putting green, which are attention getters and an activity but they have little to do with having your audience be “interactive” in a way that delivers your message and engages them in a way that is relevant to them and your brand.

What if you could do it in such a way that they will talk about what they experienced for years to come? This something you control or have a direct influence over, so what are some new ideas that you can think of?

Sin #3   It is not Memorable

And speaking of memorable, when was the last time you got feedback months later that what they experienced was “once in a lifetime” or perhaps “life changing”?

We have found that all too often people do not recall much of anything about the experiences they had from day to day because there was nothing truly memorable about the experience.

Of course, unless they connected with a great person who “engaged” them in a memorable way.

But, why put all that pressure on the team manning the booth? Why leave it to chance? Does everyone on the team have the capability?

It  can be done in such a way that they can do what they do best and be supported by something so memorable, so engaging, so much fun that when the team reaches out to connect with the leads they got from it, people will instantly recall the experience. Ae your events or booths able to do that now?

Sin #4   There is a Disconnect Between the Activity and Your Message

Let’s go back to some of the more typical ways we look to engage people. Big screens running a video loop, “ambassadors” or “barkers” calling people over, games where you can win a prize; and the list goes on. Heck, you could even hire a marching band but what does that have to do with your message?

Again, most are not truly interactive in a way that delivers your message. And even though a video can, how boring would it be to simply watch a video loop?

If you are engaged by a magician, where does your message come in? If “ambassadors” are simply attracting people to your booth, there is another lost opportunity to deliver your message.

What if you could attract, engage and deliver the message all through one thing? Wouldn’t that be the holy “triumvirate”? How would that increase your ROI?

Sin #5   It Does Not Create Curiosity

What truly makes us curious and causes us to draw in? The reason for this question is when we are in that “state of curiosity”, we are more open to suggestion, information, and ideas. We actually want to hear what is being said and will engage more fully in the experience.

So, what can connect us to our natural childlike state of curiosity?

Certain vibrant colors? Yes. Lighting? Sure. The design? Yep! Pictures, video, and audio? Yes, yes and yes. Those things are all contributing factors.

Now ask yourself, what are some things that Disney, Warner Brothers, Sea World, museums, and zoos do that create that level of curiosity in both adults and kids? There you will discover the “secret sauce”.

Sin #6   It Is Boring/Irrelevant

There is nothing worse than when an event or activity within a booth that is supposed to be “engaging” misses the mark. If it doesn’t hold your attention and make you want more, people get bored fairly quick. If it has nothing to do with the product or service they came to your booth for, it is irrelevant and soon forgotten. And if the activity does not contribute to the brand’s overall message, then it fails to serve the higher purpose that you spent so much time, effort and money to bring it to life.

A key thing to keep in mind here is to structure the activity in such a way so that it engages the participants in such a way that they get your message, it peaks their curiosity and makes them feel special because it speaks to them, their wants and needs, their afflictions and aspirations.

And what we have seen in many of these activities that are supposed to engage the audience, actually detract from and lessen the effect of the experience.

Sin #7   It Is Not Unique/Innovative

The bane of just about all producers existence is coming up with or creating something unique and innovative that will truly engage their target audience in a memorable way and yet this is exactly what they expect. “Wow” me or lose me!

And so, just about everyone is looking for the next great thing, also known as the “shiny object” syndrome. People want the latest and greatest for their event or booth because the public demands it. Yet just having the “unique” and “innovative” things could be more a detriment than a help, if it is not integrated seamlessly into the overall scheme.

Several highly critical things can derail the best of intentions and turn the “unique and innovative” things into a nightmare. Careful planning and perfect execution are a must, as well as, contingencies should things go awry.

Teaming up with people who have the knowledge, experience, and wisdom will go a long way to ensuring that the implementation of those “new and innovative” things, goes smoothly, saving time, money and sleepless nights.

Corporate Christmas Party Ideas

The season of ‘The Snowman’ re-runs, sprouts and moderate weight gain is fast approaching, and you’ve been asked to come up with the company’s corporate christmas party ideas and then to organize it.  This can seem like a hugely daunting task, especially when you start considering the wide range of people you have to accommodate and please.

Having spent many years in a band, I have attended and performed at many company staff christmas parties, witnessed good and bad, the excitement and unfortunately sometimes the fear on the face of the organiser who forgot the xmas crackers.  With this in mind, I have put together my very own guide to creating a successful Christmas event focusing on the aspects which are often most overlooked and yet make the biggest difference.

1.

First thing to consider is the atmosphere as the guests walk in, the part which sets the mood for the entire evening. One of the most important aspects is lighting. It surprises me that something so simple is often an after-thought. The mood of the lighting can really make or break the event. Lots of white light is a big ‘no no’.  Too much light makes people feel exposed and inhibited, less likely to let their guard down and to join in the party. Spot-lighting certain parts of the room and table lights work great and can contribute towards a sense of warmth and intimacy.  Yellows, reds and some blues work well.

Theme… This is usually a nice way to tie up the room colour scheme (alongside the lighting). Popular themes still seem to be based around films and the red carpet thing but I would encourage out-of-the-box thinking. I remember performing an event for which the theme was a traditional African/safari party.  This involved lots of wood, plant life and cosy hammock style swings.  There were cool chill out areas and tribal drums.  It set a great vibe straight away, got people moving around the room and talking to others and most importantly was memorable and different. Many people enjoy having the opportunity to dress up. It is always a good way create talking points as people walk in and set the social environment.

3.

The Entertainment, the Entertainment, and let me repeat THE ENTERTAINMENT. This can be the most talked about part of the event. And of course budget does play a big part, often leading to question… Band or DJ? In my experience both play their part in different ways. A great band’s job is to engage and involve the audience in the room, helping to drop the inhibition of even the most dance-floor phobic attendees. A band, alongside providing the audio and visual ‘Wow’ of live music, has far more access to the audience on a personal level.  They can bring certain party attendees on to the stage to sing, dance and be centre of attention briefly.  A band can personalise an event and make people feel special in a way in which a DJ can struggle to do, creating lasting memories.A good DJ helps to set the mood throughout the dinner service, slowly raising the energy levels in the room leading up to the after dinner performance from the band. Without this progression it can be a serious shock to the system for your audience moving from polite chats with colleagues to outright dance floor mayhem. It’s all in a great DJ’s hands to step through these stages and once the band has played, to keep the audience entertained until curfew.

4.

The Playlist… Xmas songs or No Xmas Songs!!!  Just because it’s a Christmas party, does everyone really want to listen to Christmas songs all night? Lets be honest, at the time of your party the audience will have probably endured their ten thousandth listen to “I wish it could be christmas everyday”!! So maybe just a sprinkle of christmas music during the welcoming reception, and then move quickly on.

10-Step Company Holiday Party Planning Checklist

Most companies have a holiday party for their employees each year.

Holiday parties are ideal for gathering all of your staff, showing appreciation, and celebrating the year’s success. Nonetheless, putting on a great party also requires thoughtful coordination and planning informative post. To help you plan your company’s next holiday party, we’ve developed a checklist of critical tasks.

1. Determine the type of event.

Luncheons are generally the most common type of company holiday party (51%), and evening parties are the second most common (38%). The type of holiday party can affect the date you select. For example, evening parties are often hosted on Saturdays nights (83%) while luncheon parties are most commonly hosted on weekdays. Also, luncheons tend to be a budget-friendly alternative for holiday parties, while evening parties tend to be more costly.

2. Select a date and time.

Most organizations schedule holiday parties during the second week (33%) or third week of December (28%). Holiday parties are less common during the first week of December. Fridays are generally the most common day of the week for holiday parties (50%), with Saturdays (16%) and Thursdays (15%) following. December 14th is the most common day for holiday parties (27%) this year. December 21st (17%) and December 7th (10%) were the second and third most common days.

3. Create a guest list.

Most organizations invite at least all employees (61%) to their holiday parties. Some employers invite spouses/significant others (30%). Fewer organizations invite spouses and children (7%). Depending on the type of event and date you choose for your holiday party, inviting employees’ spouses and/or children may be a nice gesture, especially if it’s an evening event on a weekend. Employees usually appreciate the opportunity to bring their family.

4. Choose a venue and caterer.

Organizations use a wide range of local venues for their holiday parties. These venues most commonly include country clubs, restaurants, and hotels. Also, the vast majority of organizations that host holiday parties (74%) use a caterer. In fact, use of catering increased from last year. Typically, organizations’ caterers are the same as their venue.

5. Send out invitations.

Once these details are set, send out invitations at least a few weeks in advance and request an RSVP by a certain date. If your party is a very formal event or has a theme, you may want to send out a mailed invitation. Email invitations work best for more informal events, like luncheons.

6. Select a theme and entertainment.

Some organizations provide entertainment at their holiday parties. Entertainment (i.e. entertainers, DJs, speakers, etc.) is by no means a common practice for company holiday parties but can aid in making your party more enjoyable for all of your guests. Party themes can also make your event unique and memorable.

7. Create an agenda.

Create an agenda for the holiday party to make sure it runs smoothly. The agenda should outline timing for arrival, cocktails/appetizers, dinner/lunch, talking points, employee recognition, gift-giving, entertainment, and closure.

8. Determine your alcohol policy.

Many employers serve alcohol at their holiday party but are usually split in terms of whether they limit or do not limit alcohol consumption. Slightly more employers that serve alcohol limit consumption (51%), but 49% do not. The most common way that organizations limit alcohol consumption is by providing drink tickets — usually 2.

9. Give a gift.

Holiday parties are the ideal time to provide a holiday gift to each of your employees. Over half of the organizations, we surveyed this year are planning to give gifts to employees this year. Gift cards are usually the most common gift, provided by 54% of respondents. Cash is the second most common gift (17%).

10. Incorporate recognition.

Holiday parties are employee appreciation events more than anything else, and as a result, it’s important to recognize the successes of your staff as a whole and communicate how much you appreciate their hard work and contributions throughout the year. Some organizations also incorporate annual recognition and rewards of employees or teams into their holiday parties.

It rarely matters whether your holiday party budget is big or small. The quality of your organization’s holiday party is in its meaning — how appreciated employees feel after they leave the event, whether the party fosters a sense of pride in the organization’s accomplishments throughout the year, how memorable the experience was, and if employees are able to enjoy time with one another. This is what really counts and what will make your holiday party a true success.

  1. Start early. Make sure that you select the date for your event in advance. This will help you to stay on track, budget, and secure caterers, rentals and additional vendors that may be needed for your event.
  2. Theme the party. Once your date is selected. Put a theme on the event; this will help with menu and set up of the event from colors to decorations.
  3. Organize. This is key. Plan the menu, beverage needs, and serving pieces (plates, glasses/cups, serving bowls, utensils, etc.).
